What Is Preventative Botox & When Should I Start?

March 23, 2025

Let’s start with the basics. What is Botox? Botox, along with Xeomin, Dysport, and Jeuveau, are all neuromodulators – or as we like to call them, “wrinkle reducers.” These neuromodulators work by blocking the receptor that causes a muscle to contract. By preventing the muscle from firing, the result is smoother lines and wrinkles.

But what if I don’t have wrinkles yet? Is this still helpful? Absolutely! Since wrinkles are caused by repetitive muscle movement, these wrinkle reducers can actually help prevent lines from forming in the first place. Many of our clients choose to start with treatments for the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes (crow’s feet).

Everyone’s anatomy is unique, so there’s no “right” age to start preventative treatments. Some people notice wrinkles in their early twenties, while others may not see them until they’re in their forties or fifties. Regardless, we believe the ideal time to begin treatment is before lines develop or become too deep.

What’s the treatment like? First off, most people find it much less intimidating than it sounds. The treatment is quick, and many say it’s less painful than a flu shot! Bruising at the injection site can occasionally occur, but it’s completely normal. Any bruising typically fades within a few days. To minimize the risk of bruising, we recommend avoiding alcohol and aspirin products 24 hours before your treatment. You might also notice some redness or small bumps at the injection sites right after treatment – this is also completely normal. Some clients return to work right away, while others might head straight to dinner – it really depends on how your skin reacts.

You’ll start to notice results within about 48 hours, with full effects visible in 7 to 14 days. Results usually last between 3 to 6 months, depending on factors like how quickly your body metabolizes the product, your unique anatomy, and your specific aesthetic goals.
